Psalms 36 – The Blessings of the Believer

18 Nov

Psalm36_SherryDuBoisIn this Psalm,  David is given an oracle (the knowledge of the sinfulness of the wicked) concerning the philosophy and life style of unbelievers as they plotted wicked schemes.  David in this Psalm records what he learned. The philosophy of the wicked is based on their absence of the Fear of the LordPsalms 36 tells us – They have no dread of the Lord, they sense no terror of their actions, so they proceed in their wickedness

Because they have no terror or respect for the Lord, the wicked commit evil continuously.  He soothes his own conscious, flatters himself,  and hides his sin, because if he seen it the way God does, he would hate what he does.  As he commits himself to sinful and evil actions, he rationalizes and has no inclination to reject the evil he does.  The Bible tells us that the wicked plot evil  ( Hosea 7:15, Nahum 1:11).

Transgression speaks to the ungodly within his heart;

There is no fear of God before his eyes.

For it flatters him in his own eyes

Concerning the discovery of his iniquity and the hatred of it.

The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceits;

He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

He plans wickedness upon his bed;

He sets himself on a path that is not good;

He does not despise evil.

Psalms 36:1-4   NASB

David found relief in his experiential knowledge of the glorious nature of the Lord, who brings about blessings to believers.  He prayed  that the Lord would  continue His loyal love and righteousness so that the wicked would not destroy his integrity.  God’s loyal love is precious to believers.  Faithfulness, righteousness, and justice are the attributes that belong to the Lord and are an inexhaustible resource for the believer.

Your loving kindness O LORD,

Extends to the heavens,

Your faithfulness reaches to the skies,

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;

Your judgments are like a great deep.

O LORD,  You preserve man and beast.

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!

And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.

They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house;

And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights.

For with You is the fountain of life;

In Your light we see light.

O continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You,

And Your righteousness to the upright in heart,

Let not the foot of pride come upon me,

And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.

There the doers of iniquity have fallen;

They have been thrust down and cannot rise.

Psalms 36:5-7-12   NASB
