Complete in Christ

Colossians 2:8-15

8. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

9. For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.

10. and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;

11. and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;

12. having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

13. When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,

14. Having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

15. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.

The first part of this scripture in verse 8, warns the Church to be watchful of false teaching. Through ignorance and immaturity we can become captive to what is false, that is what we are being warned of in this scripture by the Apostle Paul.  Studying scripture and knowing doctrines that are taught in the Bible are a protection against false teaching.  It is vitally important to know what Scripture says about Jesus Christ for this is where false teachers error, and we as believers need to be fully equipped to distinguish truth from error.

In verse 9 we are told that “all the fullness of Deity dwells in Him.”  All the fullness of Deity dwelled in bodily form” in Christ.   Christ is presented in Scripture as being fully God and fully man. Christ alone has the power to save. Verse 10 tells us that “Christ is the head over all rule and authority.”

Because of who Christ is, verse 10 says “we have been made complete in Him.” As a result of the Fall, man is incomplete, out of fellowship with God, living lives outside of God’s will, and lacking the knowledge of the truth. But when one comes to Christ, repents of his sins, he becomes a “partaker of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4), and is made complete in Christ.

Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;  Seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.”  2 Peter 1:2-4

All true Believers are complete in Christ, and find true knowledge in His word (2 Peter 1:3).  Everyone has a choice whether to follow human wisdom or come to Christ.  To follow human wisdom is to be ‘captive’ to Satan and his false system of belief, which leaves a person spiritually incomplete.
