Understanding Love

14 Feb

A thorough understand of love is absolutely essential if one is to truly understand the central message of the Bible. When the Bible speaks about love it is not restricted to only speaking about our feelings for others or romantic love.  What the Bible does teach is that ‘Love’ is about Commitment

The bible makes it very clear that ‘Love’ is not depend on good feelings but instead ‘love’ is dedicated to making a consistent and bold decision to give of ourselves for another person’s well being.  Love has these qualifying traits: dedication, loyalty, steadfastness, faithfulness, duty and responsibility.  Love is willing to sacrifice for the good of another.

Jesus is the perfect example of God’s love for us because he gave his life to save us. John 15:12-14 tells us Jesus said; “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you.”

Love matters to God, so it should matter to us. Because the Bible tells us that  we are created in God’s image we are suppose to treat others with honor and respect. Our words and actions should show that we value the other person because that person is of value to God.  The first 3 verses of 1 Corinthians 13 tells us that if our motives are wrong, if they are not aligned with selfless giving than any thing we do will amount to nothing of eternal value.
