Selfish Ambition

James 3:14-16

james3_16“But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. ”

A professing Christian who is proud, boastful, self-centered, love-less, or arrogant is a fraud.  This is a reality that no Christian can avoid. To claim otherwise is to lie against the truth, it is to contradict the gospel of Jesus Christ and the clear teaching found in the New Testament in the Bible.  The characteristic of fallen, unredeemed men is being dominated by self.  So, if  someone claiming to belong to God, and says they have the wisdom of God, but their life, character and motivations are characterized by selfish ambition and bitter jealousy, he is lying against the truth.

In verse 16 – disorder and every evil thing, these terms are broad and cover a multitude of bad results. Disorder is not normative, or does not characterize God’s people. These are not the things that represent godly wisdom, which is harmony, unity, peace and love.  If a person professes saving faith in Jesus Christ and claims to have wisdom from God, but has a heart that is proud, arrogant, and self-centered and lives a life that is worldly, sensual, and self-serving, his claims to salvation are false.  This is what scripture is saying.  For a professing Christian, we are all capable and will commit these sins, but we are NOT to practice them, or keep them as a part of our character, and so trouble your brothers and sisters in Christ!  But, we are to put on— the New nature we have in Christ, and don’t give in to the flesh. Don’t be fooled, Good deeds are no guarantee that someone is a Christian!!
