Where’s the discernment – Don’t test?

23 Feb

We read an interesting piece of information in the News and View newsleter.

Here is an excerpt from the newsletter:

“GODTV, who promoted Todd Bentley’s fame through prime time programming to over 200 nations, and carried his Lakeland meetings live for 100 consecutive nights, must surely be having second thoughts at this time. Previously they had warned people that any criticism of Bentley was “demonic” and those listening to criticism could lose their healings.  Leaders of the Prophetic Movement should likewise hang their heads in shame after they warned followers NOT to test Todd’s teachings, healings or experiences.  Rick Joyner of Morning Star Ministries said critics should be “driven out”  of their churches.  How the mighty have fallen!  If only believers had obeyed the Bible admonition to  “test all things” and not followed these leaders blindly, they would not be so hurt by this betrayal of their trust.  Todd Bentley is keeping a low profile these days in light of his personal scandal and loss of his ministry and marriage.  We all need discernment.”  News & Views  Jan-Mar. 2009       (bolding mine)

This brief article shows that there is an agenda of  ‘driving out’  Christians from their churches if they dare to discern the error and biblically evaluate Todd Bentley’s revival/movement.

But what does the Bible Say?  Is it really wrong  for Christians to ‘Test the spirits’ ?  Is it really demonic to test or examine teachings ?

1 Thessalonians 5:21,22 says:  “But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.

1 John 4:1 says: ” Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

The bible tells us to “examine everything carefully, but these leaders were telling Christians NOT to test teachings, healings, or experience!  This is typical of these kinds of churches. Questioning is forbidden and punished, it is seen by them as equivalent to questioning God and touching God’s annointed.

If you have been shunned or displaced at your church recently, there just might be reasons why you may not be welcomed any longer if you discerned the error of a highly promoted prophetic Teacher or movement that the church may have supported without your knowledge.
